Coach Westphal also plays an important role as one of our 6th grade science teachers. Corry Thompson is entering her 16th season coaching volleyball and 6th season as Bluffton Middle School’s coach. Coach Thompson started the volleyball program in 2017 and has not looked back since.

Means students have strong academic skills and are making bigger gains than their peers at other schools in the state. Samantha Gera is entering her second season as an assistant track coach and head cheerleading coach. Coach Gera is an extremely talented runner and brings that half-marathon experience to our distance runners.

A strong sports program is a vital part of student life and provides a balance with academics, which the students need for a well-rounded school experience. Young bodies need physical exercise, and students also learn to work together as a team in many of the sports programs offered. Joe Evenden is entering his 3rd season as one of our assistant track coaches. Mr. Evenden also teaches in our academic arts program and specializes in Project Lead the Way, Gateway to Technology, and Career and Technical Education.

Carter Hartwell will be entering her 5th season as Coach Thompson’s volleyball assistant. Coach Hartwell has been around volleyball since her middle school years, and I know how much her presence, discipline, and game savvy affects our volleyball players. She has also assisted with Bluffton’s Low Country Volleyball Club in 2019, 2021, and 2022. We, at the Bluffton Exempted Village School District, take great pride in making the educational experience for all our students an excellent one.

Dwon Fields Sr. is entering his 7th season as our boys head baseball coach and 22nd year coaching. Carolyn Westphal is entering her 2nd consecutive season as our head girls soccer coach. Like Coach Fields and Coach Thompson, Coach Westphal started our girls soccer program in 2016. Coach Westphal is passionate about the game of soccer and wants her players to leave her program with a true love for the game. Last year, Coach Westphal’s team finished 2nd in the county; one of the best finishes in our soccer’s program.
Furthermore, her enthusiasm, positivity, and organization allowed our cheerleaders to have an outstanding season. The BHMSD Support Portal is the central place for reporting and receiving help with any and all technology problems. You can use your staff username and password to access the portal to create new tickets and check the status of your tickets. This system is being utilized to increase the communication and improve response times for the district.
Volleyball
Dwon Fields Sr. is entering his 7th season as our boys head football coach and 22nd year coaching. Coach Fields was another trailblazer for the Bluffton Middle School athletic department as he was the first coach for our Mustang football team. Coach Fields brings a plethora of knowledge to our program, but nothing is more evident than his advocacy for his players. Outside of Bluffton Middle School, Coach Fields founded the Bluffton Bulldogs- a program started to engage the youngsters of Bluffton to participate in contact football. Coach Fields is our schools Behavior Management Specialist and assists with multiple school events and functions throughout the year.

Our district provides a welcoming environment that challenges our students and prepares them for the future. Small class sizes allow for individualized instructor attention, and state-of-the-art technology is offered throughout the district. Strong, positive relationships between the school and community are at the heart of our efforts, and members of both groups are committed to providing students in Bluffton Schools with the best learning environment in the state of Ohio. Academic progress from one grade to the next compared to students at other schools in the state. Tony Facenda began his coaching career long before he took the job at Bluffton Middle School. Coach Facenda has been coaching soccer the past 25 years and is as good as they come. He coached the girls soccer team during the 2018 and 2019 seasons before taking the boys job in 2020. Tony, his assistant coaches, and his teams have brought multiple county championships to Bluffton Middle School, and we are looking to add to that total in the years to come.
Thompson led the Mustang volleyball team to a county championship in 2018 followed by county runners-up in 2019, 2020, and 2021. On top of her decorated resume, Coach Thompson is an extremely successful coach for Low Country Volleyball Club. Inside the Bluffton Middle School doors, Corry teaches Earth Science, General 8th grade science, and creates our school’s yearbook. Darren Weingart is entering his 2nd season as Bluffton Middle School’s head track coach but has been coaching the sport for the past 10 years.
